Licensed, Local and Trusted in Northgate

Northgate Plumber is a plumbing and gasfitting business, locally owned and run, and our usual territory is the streets surrounding the railway junction. Our team turns up carrying the parts this housing stock actually asks for, from tap washers to replacement tank valves.

Age does most of the damage here. Galvanised supply pipe rusts away inside the walls, rigid old drains shift at their joints, and electric hot water tanks give up after decades of quiet service. We plan every job around the pipe that is actually in the ground, not the pipe a brochure assumes.

What We Do

Whatever has gone wrong, it lives under one of these four headings, and every job we attend sits somewhere in this tree:

Hot Water Northgate

Something going wrong right now? Do this first:

  • Water you can't stop: turn the water off at the meter, then call (07) 3067 4276.
  • A smell of gas: leave the property and call from outside. Don't flick switches or light flames.
  • A drip or a slow drain: it can usually wait for a booked visit. Call (07) 3067 4276 and we'll set a time.
  • Late at night or on a public holiday: we're available 24/7, 7 days a week, and there's no extra charge for nights, weekends or public holidays.

A Suburb Built Around the Junction

The land here was subdivided for sale in 1890, though most housing went up about two decades later, and by the 1970s the suburb was essentially built out. What is left is modest weatherboard and brick detached housing, a good number of units, and railway, workshop and factory land woven among the streets.

That mix of eras is exactly what a plumber sees on a normal week here:

  1. Galvanised supply pipe

The earliest houses close to the station date from roughly 1910, and in that era galvanised iron was what carried the water. Lengths still hidden in the walls rust shut from the inside and starve the taps at the far end of the house.

  2. Rigid drains

Most of the public sewers running beneath these streets are unreinforced concrete, with a good deal of asbestos-cement among them, and the private house drains are no better: stiff materials whose joints have spread and moved after decades underground.

  3. End-of-life tanks

Postwar homes here tend to run an electric tank outside on a slab by the laundry, and the ones that have seen off several owners now weep at the base or from the relief valve.

  4. Stormwater under load

Council's creek and storm tide mapping reaches across the east and centre of the suburb, so heavy rain lands on drains that are already holding water.

At the last census this suburb counted 4,876 residents, with 57.1 percent of homes separate houses and 22.4 percent flats or units. That means a single street can hold three eras of pipe, and each era fails in its own way.

Where Each Job Belongs

  1. Emergencies first

A burst pipe flooding the laundry or a tank dripping onto the slab cannot wait for a booking, and the emergency plumbing page sorts the urgent from the bookable.

  2. Everyday plumbing

Taps, toilets, bathrooms, kitchens and gas fitting: our general plumbing page covers the jobs that keep a house running, booked at a time that suits.

  3. Drains and sewers

When a drain keeps slowing on this flat, wet ground, the drainage overview is where the diagnosis starts, from a simple clear-out to a camera look at the line.

  4. Hot water

From a worn valve to a tank that has rusted right through, the hot water overview covers repairs on the existing system and full replacements when the old one is done.

When the Creek Rises

The ground under this suburb explains half the jobs we attend. The eastern side stands on swamp deposits, peat and mud laid down on the coastal plain, and groundwater there lies near the surface, so a trench opened along Toombul Road can start filling before anyone has finished digging it.

The flood history tells the rest of the story:

  1. What the maps show

No 1974 river flooding was mapped here and January 2011 left only a trace, but the February 2022 event reached the low ground in the east and centre, which Council also flags for creek and storm tide risk.

  2. Which streets

Station Avenue, Carter Street, Edgar Street and the Nudgee Road flats all sit inside the mapped layers, so call-outs there tend to follow heavy rain and high tides.

  3. What it does to a drain

When the eastern creek flats cop a storm on top of a high tide, the yard gullies and pits on the lower streets can brim over before the water ever reaches the creek.

A surcharged pit is not a blocked drain. If your yard gully fills after a storm, the pit is likely just overloaded, and it usually settles as the tide drops. A partly blocked house drain on a mapped street is a different matter, because it cannot relieve while the pits are full, and it backs up into the yard or the laundry instead.

What Drives the Cost of a Job

We do not do hourly guessing, and the written price is worked out from what the job actually involves. Here is what moves a price and what stays put.

  1. Access

A drain under a postwar house on clear stumps is a different job, and a different price, to one under a poured slab or a unit block.

  2. What we find

Clearing a line is one job. Finding a dropped pipe in soft eastern ground and digging to fix it is another, and you will hear about it before we start.

  3. What stays fixed

The written price covers the work described in it. If opening things up changes the picture, we stop and talk it through before going on.

Our Coverage Around the Junction

Our regular run reaches past the station into the neighbouring suburbs:

Northgate State School sits up on the Nundah boundary, reached from Amelia Street, and our jobs follow the same roads the school run does. If you are near Toombul Road, Nudgee Road or the streets off Station Avenue, you are on our run.

Why Neighbours Trust Northgate Plumber

That is the whole deal: licensed people, a written price before we start, and a local team that knows these streets well enough to bring the right parts first time.
